Man Shot Dead at Front Gate After Greeting Two Men; Suspects Hid Gun in Fridge, Police Say

Adis Hernandez-Rivas (Bexar County Sheriff’s Office).

A Texas man accused of killing another man during a dispute over money — then hiding the firearm inside a refrigerator — has now been sentenced.

Adis Hernandez-Rivas, 24, received a 30-year prison term for the murder of Duniel Valladares Fernandez, the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney’s Office said this week. The sentence follows a plea deal and brings to a close a criminal case that stretched on for more than three years.

The fatal confrontation unfolded on Feb. 16, 2023, when Hernandez-Rivas and his co-defendant, 34-year-old Marco Antonio Moreno Vasquez, arrived at a residence in the 7700 block of Winsford Drive in San Antonio. Valladares Fernandez was at the home, and authorities said the pair had come there to confront him.

Investigators said the conflict centered on a financial disagreement with the victim. During the encounter, Moreno Vasquez allegedly handed Hernandez-Rivas a gun and told him to fire it as the confrontation escalated, according to police.

An arrest affidavit obtained by the San Antonio Express-News detailed key surveillance footage from the property. According to police, a home security camera showed Valladares Fernandez walking toward the front gate to meet the two men, and the suspects’ license plate was visible on video. The recording appeared to show the conversation intensifying before Hernandez-Rivas reached into his pocket, lifted his arm as though holding an object and pointed it toward Valladares Fernandez, authorities said.

Police said Hernandez-Rivas’ arm then moved backward in a way consistent with a gun being fired. Officers and emergency responders arrived at the San Antonio shooting scene, and Valladares Fernandez was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Several days after the killing, officers in Atascosa County located the suspects’ vehicle during a traffic stop. Hernandez-Rivas and Moreno Vasquez were both taken into custody.

When searching Moreno Vasquez’ home, investigators found the murder weapon “concealed inside a refrigerator among food items,” according to the DA’s office.

“Ballistics testing confirmed that the firearm matched the shell casings recovered from the scene of the homicide,” the agency added.

Moreno Vasquez was previously convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison “for his role in the murder.”

“This case demonstrates that everyone who plays a role in a violent crime will be held accountable,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “Today’s sentence brings another measure of justice for Duniel Valladares Fernandez and his loved ones. I want to thank our prosecutors, investigators, victim advocate, and our law enforcement partners for their dedication and commitment to seeing this case through to its conclusion.”
