An Indiana man is behind bars after authorities accused him of going to his ex-girlfriend’s home and attacking her new boyfriend in what police described as an attempt to kill him.
Steven Shannon, 47, has been charged with attempted murder following the Sunday night incident at his former girlfriend’s residence in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Officers were called to the woman’s home at about 9:30 p.m., according to local CBS affiliate WANE, where they found a man who had been beaten. Multiple witnesses identified Shannon as the alleged attacker, police said. The woman also told investigators that Shannon had sent her several threatening messages, including statements that he planned to “battle” her new boyfriend.
Court documents obtained by WANE say Shannon allegedly texted his ex-girlfriend that “if he’s still there that means he’s prepared to do battle,” and further described the confrontation as being “to the death.”
After police located Shannon, he allegedly told investigators he had gone to the home only to check whether his ex-girlfriend was using drugs. He said he entered through the back door, the same way he had when he previously lived there. Shannon also claimed he was the person who had been beaten and alleged that the other man had a knife. According to court records, he told police the two men were “tussling” before he “blacked out” and left the residence.
The woman told officers that Shannon left the home after hearing sirens.
Shannon was booked into the Allen County Jail and is being held on a $120,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 31.
