A New Mexico mother allegedly placed her 6-year-old daughter in a chokehold and then offered her a “squishy” toy in exchange for keeping the incident secret.
Angela Gomez Luera, 26, was charged with child abuse Tuesday and released on her own recognizance. According to a criminal complaint obtained by El Paso, Texas-based NBC affiliate KTSM, a Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office deputy went to a hospital on Oct. 11 after the girl’s father brought her there for treatment. The father told investigators that Gomez Luera had allegedly put the child in a chokehold.
The complaint states that the girl had redness around her neck as well as bruising near her eyes.
The father told police that the child described the alleged choking when he picked her up on Oct. 11. He took her to the hospital for an examination and returned with her two days later for a follow-up visit.
Gomez Luera was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center Tuesday and released later that day. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 2.
