A school drop-off in North Carolina allegedly escalated into a frightening road rage encounter when a mother accused another driver of trying to force her off the road and then displayed a handgun, authorities said.

Jodie Abrams, 37, is facing a felony charge of carrying a firearm on educational property, along with a misdemeanor count of communicating threats, according to court documents reviewed by Law&Crime. She was taken to the Mecklenburg County Jail on Thursday and was released Friday after posting a $50,000 bond.

The incident unfolded Thursday morning as Abrams was dropping off her children at Mint Hill Elementary School in Mint Hill, North Carolina, a suburban community southeast of Charlotte.

While Abrams was driving through the school parking lot, another woman allegedly “supposedly” attempted “to run Abrams off the road,” an affidavit filed in the case states. Abrams then left the campus area and drove onto nearby Idlewild Road, where she encountered the other woman again.

Investigators allege Abrams retrieved a Charter Arms .38 Special revolver from her glove compartment and displayed it to the woman as she passed by. Authorities said she later set the firearm on the front passenger seat.

Around 8:15 a.m., Mint Hill Police Department officers were called to the Idlewild Road area for what was described as a road rage incident involving a firearm. Police said they determined the confrontation had started in the school’s drop-off line “just down the road.”

The affidavit further alleges that, “before Abrams got out of the car,” she pointed the gun at her own head in a way that allowed the other woman to see her “as a threat.” Abrams was subsequently arrested.

Court records show the defendant made her first court appearance on Friday. It is not yet clear when she is due to return.
