Mom held son, 6, under cold shower water leading to death

In a tragic case out of Illinois, Jannie Perry now faces the possibility of spending up to 45 years in prison. Perry, a 42-year-old mother, recently pleaded guilty to first-degree murder following the death of her 6-year-old son, Damari Perry. This incident, which occurred in North Chicago, unfolded the day before the young boy’s birthday when he was subjected to a prolonged cold shower as a form of punishment.

According to court records, prosecutors have opted to drop additional charges against Jannie Perry, which included dismembering a human body, conspiracy, and abuse of a corpse, as part of her plea agreement. The recommended sentence reflects the severity of the crime, with Perry’s sentencing scheduled for January 30.

The chilling details of the case reveal that Perry, her 20-year-old son Jeremiah, and another minor were involved in devising this harsh punishment as a response to something Damari reportedly did on December 29, 2021. Tragically, the punishment involved forcing the child into a cold shower on the following day, which ultimately led to his death.

Adding a further layer of deception, the family delayed contacting the authorities until January 5, 2022, when they filed a false police report with the Skokie Police Department, claiming that Damari had gone missing. This report sparked a series of investigations that unraveled their fabricated story.

As reported by Newsweek, Damari’s 16-year-old sister initially informed investigators that she and her brother were driven to a party in Skokie on January 4, 2022. She claimed to have lost consciousness due to excessive drinking and awoke to find both the man who drove them and her brother missing.

In reality, after Damari’s untimely death, his body was subjected to further indignities. It was burned, and his brother, Jeremiah Perry, allegedly disposed of the remains in a neighborhood in Gary, Indiana. This grim conclusion underscores the tragic nature of this case, which has left a community grappling with the loss of a young life.

A grand jury indicted Jannie Perry and her son in February 2022, saying the murder was exceptionally brutal and heinous. Jeremiah Perry’s case remains ongoing.

“As prosecutors considered the crime scene where Damari died, it became clear that this was a calculated plan against a small child. Damari’s final minutes warrant the sentencing enhancements that accompany such ‘brutal and heinous’ circumstances,” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said after the indictment. “The defendants’ stunning failure to seek medical attention demonstrates their intent to end Damari’s life. Transporting and burning the body as part of a cover up also warranted the additional serious charges we filed.”
