A Wisconsin mother is facing criminal charges after authorities said she initially refused to allow her 5-year-old daughter to receive emergency treatment for a severely infected tooth. Doctors reportedly warned that the infection had become so dangerous it could have caused the child to suffocate and die.
Jenice Long, 44, was charged with neglecting a child resulting in great bodily harm, according to La Crosse County court records reviewed by Law&Crime. She was taken to the La Crosse County Jail and appeared in court for the first time this week.
Authorities said Long ultimately gave permission for her daughter to be airlifted for medical care. She was arrested afterward and booked into jail.

Officials have not explained why Long initially opposed the treatment. The child’s condition and current whereabouts were not immediately disclosed.
At her initial court appearance, Long was ordered to remain in custody on a $1,000 signature bond. She is scheduled to appear again on Nov. 12.
La Crosse is located in western Wisconsin along the Mississippi River, near the state’s border with Minnesota.
