Authorities have refuted allegations of foul play surrounding the demise of a Mississippi college student whose body was found hanging from a tree on Monday.
Demartravion Reed, 21, was discovered hanging from a tree in the heart of Delta State University’s campus, behind the pickleball courts. Delta State University police chief Michael L. Peeler stated that Reed’s death is being regarded as a suicide, and Bolivar County Deputy Coroner Murray Roark informed the Mississippi Free Press that there were no signs of broken arms or limbs.
“I saw no broken limbs,” he said, declining to provide additional details.
Roark reportedly assisted in examining Reed’s body. The results of Reed’s full autopsy are pending.
Reed’s mother shared with WREG that her last conversation with her son was on Friday, and he appeared eager about his school activities. His passing coincided with the university’s centennial celebrations, which were subsequently cancelled.
After discovering Reed’s body, the campus was closed, though Peeler confirmed that an official lockdown did not occur. Classes were suspended on Monday, but University President Dr. Daniel Ennis indicated to the Clarion Ledger that classes are slated to resume.
“I want to reiterate Chief Peeler’s comment: There is no evidence of a threat to campus, and there is no evidence the campus is unsafe at this point,” he stated.
