Man charged with stealing Bondi terror attack victim's camera

A significant development has emerged from last year’s tragic events at Bondi Beach. A man has been arrested and charged, accused of stealing and pawning the camera equipment of Peter Meagher, a victim of the horrific attack.

On that fateful evening of December 14, a peaceful outdoor event turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy when two assailants opened fire, resulting in the loss of 15 lives. Among the victims was Peter Meagher, a 61-year-old retired police officer and passionate photographer.

The attackers were identified by the police as a father-son duo. Sajid Akram, aged 50, was killed during the police intervention, while his son, Naveed Akram, sustained injuries and was subsequently arrested. Naveed continues to face legal proceedings.

Following the attack, allegations surfaced that Meagher’s camera gear had been stolen amidst the tumult. This prompted an investigation that culminated in a police operation in Marayong, located in Sydney’s western suburbs, early yesterday morning.

During the search, authorities confiscated a camera, along with handcuffs and various electronic devices. Additionally, a vehicle search revealed a “small amount of white crystal powder” and more electronics, further complicating the case.

They seized a camera, handcuffs, and electronic devices at the premises, while a car search yielded a “small amount of white crystal powder” and other electronics.

A 35-year-old man was arrested and charged with multiple theft, drug, and weapon offences.

He was bailed and will return to court in June.

Police will allege the man was also a photographer at the Hannukah event, who stole Meagher’s camera equipment and pawned it days later.
