An Ohio father who struck his 6-month-old child while assaulting the child’s mother has been handed a two-month jail sentence and probation after entering a no-contest plea to several charges stemming from the incident.

Avery Mapes, 23, last month entered a no-contest plea to a charge of endangering children. In exchange, a domestic violence charge was reduced to negligent assault. As part of the plea agreement, charges of assault, obstruction, and disorderly conduct were dropped. Mapes received a 60-day sentence for negligent assault and a year of probation for the child endangerment charge, according to court documents.

Authorities detained Mapes on December 4, 2025, following an alleged attack on his live-in fiancée and the mother of his child, during which he was reportedly intoxicated. The woman sustained “several marks and bruises” from the assault, which also included a blow to their 6-month-old child, leaving the infant with “multiple red marks and bruising,” according to official records.

Following the assault, the family sought medical attention at a local hospital, where Mapes reportedly resisted law enforcement officers and “attempted to bite” them several times, police reported.

“The defendant was in a rage, shouting racial slurs, and causing a commotion in the hospital room,” stated the probable cause document for Avery Mapes’ arrest. Initially, he faced charges including assault, endangering children, domestic violence, obstruction, and disorderly conduct due to his alleged actions.

Police alleged that “the defendant made multiple attempts to hit the mother while she held the 6-month-old, inadvertently striking the child at least once,” according to a police report.

When cops first arrived at the couple’s Toledo home, they found Mapes’ fiancee with “bloody handprints” on the back of her hoodie, according to court documents.

“She had bruising and red marks on her forehead and upper right area,” the probable cause statement said, noting how Mapes allegedly ran at his fiancee before unleashing his attack. “It appeared as if her arm had been squeezed,” the statement added.

While at the hospital, Mapes was handcuffed to a bed, which he allegedly dragged around his room in an attempt to assault officers. He attempted to “kick and strike” medical staff members and “continued to yell racial slurs and profanities” while at the facility, police alleged.

“The defendant refused to follow commands,” court documents said.

Mapes was released on his own recognizance after the incidents with an electronic monitoring device and was ordered to stay away from his fiancee and child.
