A Washington woman is facing a murder charge after prosecutors accused her of killing her teenage daughter’s newborn son.
Dayjanay Thomas, 31, has been charged with second-degree murder and criminal mistreatment. The charges stem from an incident in which she and her 14-year-old daughter allegedly arrived at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma with the infant’s body.
Court records obtained by the Tacoma News Tribune, a local news organization, say Thomas’ daughter gave birth to a boy at home on Feb. 10. The teenager told her mother she had not known she was pregnant. Thomas also told investigators that she had been unaware of the pregnancy.

Police arrested Thomas on Feb. 23 and initially charged her with criminal mistreatment, alleging she failed to obtain medical attention for her daughter after the birth. After investigating the newborn’s death, prosecutors filed the second-degree murder charge on Aug. 20. Thomas remained jailed at the time.
The teenager and the family’s landlord have not been charged in relation to the infant’s death.
Thomas remains held at the Pierce County Jail on $500,000 cash bail. A judge has barred her from contacting her daughter. Her next hearing is set for Oct. 1.
