A Florida father is accused of choking and striking his teenage son with an extension cord after the boy woke up in the morning and said he was hungry, according to authorities.
Alex Romero-Padilla, 31, has been charged with aggravated child abuse.
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, officers were called Sunday to a home in the 100 block of W. 6th Street in Hialeah following a report of an assault. The 13-year-old victim told police he woke up at about 9 a.m. and began watching TikTok videos on his phone.
The boy said he told his father he was hungry and wanted something to eat. Romero-Padilla then began yelling, allegedly grabbed the teen by the neck and threw him to the floor.
Police allege Romero-Padilla then used a brown extension cord to hit the boy.
The teen was taken to a hospital, where medical staff documented bruising around his neck and arms, along with lash marks on his back, right arm and thigh, the affidavit states.
After being read his Miranda rights, Romero-Padilla told investigators he did not have “good communication” with his son and said he was frustrated because the boy did not follow rules, police wrote. He also told officers his son had gone out with friends without permission and claimed the teen had taken about $20 from his wallet.
Romero-Padilla said he became upset when his son got mad and “smirked” while he was trying to “correct his behavior,” cops wrote. He admitted to administering “corporal punishment” by whipping his son with the extension cord.
Cops arrested the father and took him to the Miami-Dade County Jail, where he remains under an immigration hold. His next court date is set for Sept. 14.
