A Baltimore mother has been ordered held without bail after authorities said her six young children were discovered alone inside a squalid apartment.
Teonna Brown, 34, is facing six counts of child neglect after police said all six children, each under 10 years old, were found Monday by a City of Baltimore employee who spotted them behind their apartment with “without apparent adult supervision,” according to a police report obtained by local Fox affiliate WBFF. Officers who responded to the Baltimore rental property reported that the children were “partially clothed,” with some wearing “only socks and soiled diapers.” Police also said some of the children were walking barefoot near broken glass.
Authorities said the conditions they encountered after entering the home deepened their concerns.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told WJZ the city will review how Brown’s family may have slipped through existing safeguards, saying, “[W]e’ll also be taking a tough, hard look at whether the landlord, the private landlord who owned this property, was aware of the condition and take any action that we can there as well.”
Brown was arrested and remains jailed without bail. During a Wednesday court hearing, her public defender told the judge that Brown “had unfortunately dealt with substance abuse, and it has been a difficult six months.”
In denying bond, the judge pointed to Brown’s criminal history, along with a prior failure to appear and an open warrant.
Brown’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 1.
