A man from Illinois is facing allegations of administering abortion medication to his girlfriend without her consent, resulting in a miscarriage at her apartment.
The 31-year-old, Emerson Evans, is currently held at the McLean County Detention Facility, pending a hearing on Monday, as stated by Bloomington police. Bloomington is located in central Illinois, roughly 140 miles from Chicago.
According to police reports, Evans “administered abortion-inducing drugs to the victim without her knowledge or consent.” The authorities were informed of the alleged incident on Friday after responding to a home in Bloomington for a “pregnant person experiencing a medical emergency.”
The medical emergency was a miscarriage, police said.
Local NBC and ABC affiliate WEEK, referencing court documents, reported that during their visit to the woman’s apartment around 5 p.m. on Friday, officers found her in distress in the bathroom, along with a substantial amount of blood.
The woman reportedly told police that she was about seven weeks pregnant — and that Evans had told her he wanted to terminate the pregnancy.
Evans reportedly informed police that he believed he was assisting her in making a decision, claiming she was aware of the abortion-inducing pills. He allegedly disclosed to investigators that he acquired mifepristone from someone on campus for about $50, though the exact “campus” was not specified.
Evans faces charges of two counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child. Under Illinois law, this offense carries a potential penalty equivalent to first-degree murder — a prison term ranging from 20 to 60 years, according to WEEK’s report.
