A Washington state man has been jailed after authorities say he fatally stabbed his mother and later attacked a responding police officer.
Christopher Mott, 42, is facing charges of first-degree murder, assault, and burglary in connection with the death of his mother, 79-year-old Colleen Marie McCue, the Renton Police Department said.
The case unfolded shortly before midnight on Aug. 3 at the Cedar River Terrace Apartments on Burnett Avenue South in Renton, a major suburb just outside Seattle, according to police.
Officers were initially called to the apartment complex after reports that a vehicle had crashed into a building and that possible gunfire had been heard, according to a probable cause statement obtained by Seattle NBC affiliate KING.
When police reached the scene, they found the apartment building’s front doors smashed and a parking post outside mangled into twisted metal.
During the early stages of the investigation, an officer spotted a man later identified as Mott, who allegedly took off running, charging documents say. As officers pursued him on foot, Mott allegedly reached toward his waistband, pulled out an object, and lunged at one of the officers.
The officer, who had drawn his firearm, stumbled backward and fell as the man fled, according to the probable cause statement.
A second officer continued the pursuit, police said. Eventually the defendant turned around and slashed at the second officer’s face with the knife, according to the charging document. Then, the second officer used a Taser-like device on Mott — who subsequently dropped the knife and then seized up from the electric shock.
As the defendant was being arrested, he allegedly cried out: “Oh my God. So much more to come,” according to law enforcement.
There certainly was.
The second officer then told the first officer he could not see out of his right eye, according to body-worn camera footage. It turned out he had been stabbed by Mott, according to the charging document.
Paramedics later noted the injured officer had a laceration on his upper lip, a laceration running across his right cheek toward his ear, as well as a wound on his right eye, police said.
During the arrest, Mott allegedly said “something along the lines of ‘I just killed my mom,'” according to the Benton Reporter.
Eventually, other officers arrived. As the defendant was being handcuffed and sat upright, after admitting to killing his mother, he said “it felt great,” according to the probable cause statement.
Investigators then returned to the apartment complex, contacted the maintenance manager and obtained surveillance footage showing the defendant causing the damage to the front of the building, police said.
While there, officers also checked the unit where Mott’s mother lived. Inside, they found the woman stabbed to death on the floor.
The defendant is being detained in the King County Jail on $5 million bail.
