According to court documents released on Sunday, former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, in a drunken state, assaulted a 69-year-old delivery driver in Indianapolis, resulting in Sanchez being stabbed in self-defense.

Sanchez, aged 38, was admitted to the hospital early Saturday following the stabbing incident in downtown Indianapolis. He was taken into custody at the hospital the same day while still in stable condition.

The former first-round pick for the Jets faced official charges on Sunday for battery causing injury, public intoxication, and illegal entry of a vehicle, all classified as misdemeanors.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears stated, “This unfortunate event should never have taken place.” He added that what started as a minor disagreement should never have escalated into an altercation that left individuals injured.

The altercation occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday when the delivery driver parked his truck in an alley between two hotels, as detailed in the charging documents. Surveillance footage shows Sanchez approaching the vehicle and opening the driver’s door, according to police.

Prosecutors noted in an affidavit, “Mr. Sanchez informed [the driver] that parking there was not permitted and mentioned that he had communicated with the hotel manager.”

The driver is an employee with a company that deals with commercial cooking oil recycling and disposal and he parked at the loading dock of the Westin, police said. During the interaction, the driver was confused because he did not have his hearing aids in — but he smelled alcohol on Sanchez’s breath, he told investigators.

During his conversation with Sanchez, the driver got out of his vehicle and walked around, seeking nearby security, cops said. When he tried to get back in his vehicle, Sanchez blocked him and shoved him to the ground, he told police.

After a brief struggle in which Sanchez struck the man and threw him to the ground, the driver attempted to pepper-spray Sanchez, cops said. However, the driver told police Sanchez was unaffected by the spray.

The man told police it was at that point he thought, “This guy is trying to kill me” and pulled the knife, stabbing Sanchez multiple times.

First responders found Sanchez in a bar next to the alley around 12:30 a.m. Saturday and he has been hospitalized since. He was in Indianapolis as part of Fox Sports’ broadcast team for Sunday’s Las Vegas Raiders at Indianapolis Colts game. Fox announced that Brady Quinn will replace Sanchez on the call.
