A Pennsylvania woman returned home from running errands to a horrifying scene: her husband had been stabbed multiple times, and blood trails led toward the basement area where their son often spent time, authorities said.

Kabir Buhari, 42, is facing a criminal homicide charge in the death of his father, 69-year-old Alhaji Buhari, the Allegheny County Police Department announced. He was taken into custody at a hotel in Bethesda, Maryland, and is expected to remain there pending extradition to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

According to court records obtained by Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE, the suspect’s mother came back to the home Saturday after running errands and found her husband covered in blood. He had suffered stab wounds to his face, neck and chest.

Investigators said two knives were found on a nearby counter. Blood trails also extended toward the basement, where Kabir Buhari allegedly spent much of his time, but he was not at the residence when authorities arrived.

Allegheny County police said 911 dispatchers received a call shortly before 4 p.m. about an “unresponsive” man at a home in the 100 block of Arnoni Drive. First responders found Alhaji Buhari with multiple stab wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s wife reportedly told investigators that their son had struggled with mental illness and had previously been involuntarily committed to a treatment facility. Police said interviews with witnesses and evidence gathered at the home led detectives to identify Kabir Buhari as the suspect and conclude that he had left the area.

Authorities later determined the suspect was believed to be at a hotel in Maryland, more than 200 miles southeast of the crime scene. Kabir Buhari was arrested by the Montgomery County Police Department with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

Court records do not yet list a court hearing for the defendant, indicating that he has yet to be extradited to Pennsylvania.
