A Hawaii security guard was fatally beaten during an overnight shift at a beachfront resort while taking his lunch break and eating a cheeseburger, police say.

Michael Dyer, 63, was killed at the Sands of Kahana complex in Maui, where he worked as a security guard, according to police. Authorities have accused Legend Storer, a 20-year-old former champion swimmer from California, in the attack.

A co-worker told Hawaii News Now that Dyer “was just in his office having a cheeseburger on his lunch break” when Storer, who was naked, allegedly assaulted and killed him with a 5-gallon water bottle.

“It’s horrible,” co-worker Bell Hill told the outlet. “He was a great person.”

After the alleged killing, Storer was found wandering nude in an area near the condo complex and taken into custody, police said. He has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure.

“Mike Dyer was tragically killed while on his graveyard shift as a security guard at Sands of Kahana,” a GoFundMe page created for Dyer’s wife says. “Thankfully, Mike’s killer is in police custody, but Joy’s emotional journey is just beginning as she starts to process this devastating event. They were married for 26 years.”

Storer previously swam for Concordia University in California, according to The Orange County Register. The report said he was also a two-time Maui Interscholastic League champion during high school.

“After Concordia discontinued the Men’s Swim program in May 2025, Legend did not return as a student,” Ann Ashmon, the school’s associate vice president of strategic communications, told the Register on Monday.

Storer allegedly entered the office of the condo in Kahana where Dyer was working around 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 5 and killed him. The attack was caught on surveillance video.

When police later found Storer wandering around naked in the area, they took him to a local hospital for evaluation. He was transported around 3 a.m., a little over two hours before Dyer’s body was found.

Police realized Storer was allegedly responsible for killing Dyer only after reviewing the surveillance footage. Local officials have not released a motive for the attack on Dyer.

Storer is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday. He is being held without bail.
