A man shot his stepbrother to death after he came their mom’s home to take her out for Mother’s Day, authorities in Texas say.

As reported by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, deputies responded to a shooting incident around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at a residence located on the 700 block of North Vista Drive in Houston. Upon their arrival, they discovered 32-year-old Eduardo Alfaro Jr. with multiple gunshot injuries. Paramedics on the scene declared him deceased.

Harris County Sheriff’s Detective Mario Quintanilla informed local NBC affiliate KPRC that first responders, while administering aid to Alfaro in an upstairs bedroom, detected movement within the room. They discovered and subsequently detained the suspect, 50-year-old Charles Storey.

“Deputies backed out and secured a warrant to process the scene,” Quintanilla said.

Investigators concluded that Alfaro had come to the house to escort his mother for a Mother’s Day outing. However, Storey, who is Alfaro’s stepbrother, was also present, reportedly during a “drinking binge,” according to Gonzalez. An argument erupted between the two men, resulting in Storey allegedly shooting Alfaro fatally, with their mother still inside the residence.

Deputies arrested Storey on a murder charge and took him to the Harris County Jail.

“What should’ve been a pleasant evening between mother and son, instead turned deadly,” said Gonzalez, adding their “mom lost two sons on Mother’s Day.”

A probable cause arrest affidavit that would further detail the argument between brothers was not immediately available. Storey’s next appearance in court also is unclear.
