Mexican authorities have detained a man from California accused of attempting to transport his deceased partner across the border.

As reported by Los Angeles’s NBC affiliate KNBC, Erick Alcantar Almanza, 44, is currently incarcerated in Mexico. He is alleged to have taken this drastic step after killing his long-term partner, Aracely Romero. During an interview with KNBC, their eldest son revealed that Almanza purportedly admitted to the murder while driving toward the U.S.-Mexico border, with Romero’s body seated next to him.

Almanza reportedly communicated with multiple family members, who last saw Romero on a Friday. According to KNBC, Almanza’s mother alerted Mexican authorities, claiming her son had murdered Romero. The couple shared responsibility for five children, whose ages range from 16 to 26. Investigators suspect that the murder took place in Long Beach, California.

Miguel Angel Gaxiola, a prosecutor in Baja California, Mexico, informed KNBC, “We are currently exchanging information to pinpoint the crime scene in Long Beach.”

Almanza was arrested on Sunday in connection with Romero’s murder. According to KNBC, he told detectives that he and Romero had an argument leading up to the alleged killing. Neither a motive nor a cause of death was made clear.
