Woman accused of trying to kill police during search warrant fronts court

A woman accused of opening fire on police officers executing a search warrant has entered a plea of not guilty to three charges of attempted murder.

Samantha Ellen Bird, 37, is accused of using a .22 rifle to fire at an unmarked police car at a home in rural Collinsvale in southern Tasmania in October.

Authorities reported that a single bullet struck the vehicle’s front wheel guard, discharged from an estimated distance of 60 meters.

Police were present at the residence with a search warrant amid an ongoing criminal probe, according to official statements.

During her appearance at the Hobart Magistrates Court, the accused, Bird, also faces several charges related to firearms and drugs, as well as allegations of possessing explosives.

She has denied the attempted murder charges and is scheduled for a hearing in the Supreme Court this coming February.

Assistant Commissioner Adrian Bodnar of Tasmania Police had previously stated in October that multiple officers were at the scene and had just passed the front gate when they heard what was described as a “crack” sound.

Derek Michael Crosswell, 38, was charged with attempted aggravated assault and gun offences over the incident, and has been remanded in custody.
