Couple kept malnourished 10-year-old in a dark room: Cops

Andrew Warrington and Kellie Warrington (Scott County Jail).

Authorities allege that a couple from Iowa subjected their 10-year-old son to prolonged confinement in a dark, locked room without any food or water.

Andrew Warrington, 48, and Kellie Warrington, 47, face charges including first-degree kidnapping, child endangerment, willful injury, and neglect of a dependent. Law enforcement officials accuse them of deliberately inflicting severe mistreatment on their son.

According to details in a criminal complaint secured by Law&Crime, the Davenport Police Department was dispatched on February 23 to an address on the 1200 block of E. Rusholme Street to probe allegations of child abuse.

Following an extensive investigation, police concluded that the couple “knowingly confined” the child in a bedroom secured with a latch, denying him access to “water, food, light, bathroom facilities, and mental stimulation for significant durations.”

Additionally, the boy was reportedly without “appropriate clothing, shelter, healthcare, or supervision for his age,” and his room lacked any furniture.

The Warringtons reportedly neglected to seek medical attention for their son’s deteriorating health, particularly his malnutrition. The boy was hospitalized, having been diagnosed with malnutrition and suffering from head injuries, though the affidavit does not specify the length of his hospital stay.

Medical professionals told cops the victim could have died if he hadn’t received treatment at the hospital, per the affidavit. The complaint did not give an updated condition for the boy. It’s unclear why the parents allegedly subjected the boy to such harsh treatment. Police also did not divulge what sparked the investigation.

Officers arrested the couple on Friday and took them to the Scott County Jail, where they are each being held on a $2 million cash bond. They have a court date set for June 16.
