An Arkansas resident is embroiled in legal trouble after allegedly orchestrating a sham abduction of her disabled daughter to dissuade her from engaging with strangers on the internet.

Tamara “Tammi” Hamby, aged 59, surrendered to authorities and subsequently was released from the Crawford County jail on Wednesday. She, along with three others, faces charges of endangering a vulnerable individual. Additionally, Tammi Hamby has been charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Reportedly, as per an arrest warrant sourced by local CBS affiliate KFSM, Hamby purportedly staged the fake abduction to impart a lesson to her 22-year-old daughter, who has mental disabilities, about the perils of online stranger interactions.

Jeffrey Hamby, Tammi’s spouse and the young woman’s father, shared with the station that the family had been grappling with an online scam artist for several months. Their daughter was under the false impression that the scammer was country music star Luke Bryan. Jeffrey expressed, “We’ve exhausted all options, yet she persists in communication, and we feared he would lure her away. He was going to take her.”

As outlined in the arrest warrant, Tammi Hamby allegedly enlisted Shannon Childers, a live-in certified nurse assistant responsible for the daughter’s care, to plot a faux kidnapping involving individuals claiming they could facilitate a meeting with Luke Bryan. Childers reportedly brought in two acquaintances, David Quach and Nico Austria, to execute the plan.

Authorities revealed that Tammi Hamby’s plan involved her daughter being taken from their residence and tied to a tree in a nearby field, with Tammi herself orchestrating the rescue.

The alleged scheme unfolded on November 17, when Quach and Austria arrived at the Hamby home donning ski masks. As Jeffrey Hamby recounted to local ABC affiliate KHBS, the pair informed the daughter that Luke Bryan had sent them, declaring, “Luke sent us today. It’s now or never.” The daughter then “willingly” entered their vehicle, clutching her guitar and teddy bear.

According to the affidavit, Austria got lost while driving and brought the daughter to the wrong field. They followed through with their alleged plan to zip-tie the young woman to a tree and threaten to harm her. However, the daughter broke free and ran for help before Austria and Quach tackled her. They allegedly tied her to the tree again and left. Police said that Tammi Hamby was watching the whole thing unfold.

The daughter was able to free herself a second time and run to a nearby house to call 911.

A deputy with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office who interviewed the daughter said that she “was in fear for her life and clung tightly to a teddy bear the entirety of me speaking with her during her interview.”

Tammi Hamby, Childers, Quach, and Austria were all arrested and booked into jail. Tammi Hamby’s bond was set at $125,000, which she posted. Bond was set at $25,000 for the three other defendants.

Jeffrey Hamby was not charged and stated that he did not know about the alleged plot. The Hambys’ daughter was taken into custody by the Arkansas Department of Human Services after filing an emergency petition. Tammi Hamby is due in court again on Dec. 10.
