A California man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for fatally poisoning his mother during a dispute over money.
Bradley Dexter, 43, pleaded no contest to first-degree murder and received the sentence Wednesday, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced. Prosecutors said Dexter killed his 72-year-old mother, Kathleen Dexter, by adding a lethal dose of fentanyl to glasses of oat milk and wine. She was found dead on June 6, 2023, while she and her son were involved in an ongoing dispute over inheritance money.
During Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, Dexter discussed his history of drug addiction, saying he had spent three years in jail while struggling with addiction and “skeletons” from his childhood. He said he was experiencing a mental health crisis and was in a state of “psychosis” when he killed his mother.

“I’m very sorry for what happened,” Dexter told the court. “Not a day goes by that I don’t regret my actions. I love my mom. If I could give up my own life to bring her back, I would. I’m not the person I was.”
Dexter received credit for time already served and will be eligible for parole after 18 years.
