The suspect’s mother said he has been “distraught with the certainty a nuclear war is imminent”

On Monday, Kentucky authorities arrested a man for murdering a former politician’s daughter during a home invasion last week.

Kentucky State Police said in a statement that a deputy with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office spotted Shannon Gilday, 23, walking along Barnes Mill Road and apprehended him without incident. Gilday is accused of breaking into a Taylor Mill home on February 22 and fatally shooting Jordan Morgan, 32, as she slept in bed.

The victim’s father, C. Wesley Morgan, reportedly suffered non-lethal injuries after exchanging gunfire with Gilday. Gilday fled the scene in a vehicle, police said.

The slain woman was a lawyer, while her father is a former lawmaker. C. Wesley Morgan previously told WLEX that he believes a “doomsday-style” bunker at their mansion may have made their home a target.

Gilday’s mother appeared to support this theory in a statement issued to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

“My son Shannon Gilday, who I love so dearly, has not been of sound mind the last couple of weeks, distraught with the certainty a nuclear war is imminent,” she said.

“He spoke of building a bunker and the CIA following him. I tried to get him psychiatric help but to no avail.”

C. Wesley Morgan claimed that Gilday broke into their home by scaling a scaffolding that had been up for a week due to construction on a porch. He also told WLEX that he believed he shot the suspect 11 times, but he may have been wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the break-in.

“He shot me three times,” he said. “I’ve been shot twice in the arm and once in the hip.”

Gilday is charged with murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree assault, and attempted murder. State police have not revealed a motive.
