Michigan authorities say a teenager with a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit ran a red light in a Dodge Charger and fatally struck a teacher who was driving for Uber to earn extra money.
Tracy Darwin Sutton, 19, is charged with operating while intoxicated causing death and operating while intoxicated causing serious injury in connection with the death of 59-year-old Dwayne Antonio Harvey.
Oak Park police, in the Detroit suburb, were called around 11 p.m. Sept. 17 to a crash at Eight Mile Road and Coolidge Highway. Officers arriving at the scene found a Dodge Charger and a Buick Envision, both heavily damaged.
A 23-year-old man, who had been riding in the Charger’s back seat, was lying in the roadway after being ejected in the collision. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, while Sutton sustained minor injuries.
Officers had to remove Harvey from the Envision before he was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Video from a nearby business reportedly showed Sutton driving east on Eight Mile Road before allegedly running a red light and crashing into Harvey’s Envision as it traveled north on Coolidge Highway.
Sutton’s blood alcohol content was reportedly 0.161, more than twice Michigan’s legal limit, according to local Fox affiliate WJBK.
Harvey taught math at Oak Park High School and drove for Uber at night.
“At Oak Park High School, he was known for his warm smile, positive spirit, and genuine connection with students,” the school said in a Facebook post. “He encouraged others, showed up for his students and colleagues, and brought a special energy to our school community each day.”
Harvey also served as the senior class sponsor and was a fan of Prince and the color purple. Students and staff plan to wear purple and play his favorite music Friday in his memory.
“Mr. Harvey will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication to students, and the positive presence he brought to Oak Park High School each day. He will always be a part of the Oak Park Schools family and will be deeply missed,” the school said.
Sutton was booked into the Oakland County Jail and is being held on a $2 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 29.
