A 15-year-old accused of stabbing a stranger inside a California Whole Foods tried to flee the scene, but police say witnesses helped ensure he was quickly caught.
The juvenile was arrested after the stabbing, which occurred Tuesday shortly after 6:30 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe grocery store, city officials said in a statement posted to Facebook.
Authorities credited people at the scene with stepping in during the chaotic moments after the attack, saying community members helped both the injured victim and responding officers.
“South Lake Tahoe Police Department would like to thank the members of the community on scene who took action to tend to the victim and provided critical information to the officers, which swiftly led to the arrest of the suspect,” city officials said.
“The victim remains in the hospital, in stable condition,” the statement added.
South Lake Tahoe is located in northeastern California near the Nevada state line.
