A 16-year-old boy found dead on Monday was shot and stabbed by his mother, Missouri authorities said.

During a welfare check at a residence in St. Charles, police noticed a strong, unpleasant odor before finding Krista Roy’s son, Carter Bennett, dead from gunshot and stab wounds. Authorities also found Roy, who had ingested pills and had self-inflicted injuries on her arms, as per KSDK.

Roy allegedly admitted to shooting her son multiple times as he slept.

“She then lay beside him because he was still conscious, caressing him as he called out ‘mommy, mommy,'” stated St. Charles County prosecutor Joe McCulloch.

According to KSDK, Roy claimed she then stabbed her son with a kitchen knife to ensure he was dead.

KPLR reported that Roy admitted to taking her ex-husband’s Bersa .380 handgun from his home on September 26, with the intent to end both her son’s life and her own.

Roy was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. She remains jailed without bond.
