Texas authorities are searching for a capital murder suspect who removed his ankle monitor and escaped just before his trial was set to start, setting his relatives’ home on fire in the process.
Trever McEuen, 32, has been added to the state’s most wanted list, and a reward for his recapture has reached $30,000, KDFW reported.
McEuen allegedly admitted to shooting his neighbor, 35-year-old Aaron Martinez, on May 1, 2023, after being apprehended following a SWAT standoff. He faced charges of capital murder, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and murder.
His trial had been set to begin on May 5, but four days earlier, he cut of the ankle monitor and fled.
McEuen had been released twice before after posting $2 million bonds.
Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas since succeeding four-term governor Rick Perry in 2015, described the state’s bail system as “broken and deadly” and urged an emergency bail reform “that must pass the legislature this session.”
