On Thursday, Georgia police arrested a nurse who allegedly raped an elderly patient last year.

The 73-year-old woman, who had been admitted to Grady Memorial Hospital, reportedly passed away weeks after an assault by nurse support technician Chappell Lee, 56, in October 2024. Although she died from unrelated health conditions, her family noted a severe decline in her mental health following the incident, as reported by WAGA.

Alongside a civil lawsuit, the police in Atlanta accused Lee of entering the patient’s hospital room, closing the door, and raping her. Security camera footage allegedly showed him in the room for approximately 14 minutes.

According to L. Chris Stewart, the family’s lawyer, a police report revealed that Lee had informed the registered nurse responsible for the woman that he would check on her himself. The nurse remarked on how unusual it was for a support tech to make such a request, as reported by WXIA.

The family of the victim also claimed that Lee displayed flirtatious behavior toward her. Following the incident, the woman confided in her family and created a video intended for use during any potential jury trial.

“There’s also video evidence of him cleaning up the scene, taking evidence from the sheets, and getting rid of them,” Stewart told WXIA.

Grady Hospital issued a statement to WSB-TV, noting that they had promptly alerted Atlanta police about the allegations. At that time, no physical evidence of the assault had been discovered.

Lee faces charges of rape, abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a disabled or elderly individual, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated sodomy, and evidence tampering. He remains in custody without bond.
