A Texas man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his wife during a domestic dispute, reportedly because she did not take his back pain seriously. The incident took place while their three children were present in the home.
Jose Romero, 43, is accused of fatally shooting his 39-year-old wife, Yanira Marin de Romero, on May 2. According to a police statement, the tragic event unfolded during an argument at their residence in Harris County, with Romero firing multiple shots while Marin de Romero was in the bathroom.
The couple resided in Cloverleaf, a community in the Houston metropolitan area. Family members, in the wake of the tragedy, shared on social media that the couple’s relationship appeared “perfect,” expressing disbelief at the sudden turn of events.
“Our hearts and family are shattered, struggling to accept this reality,” a family member wrote on Facebook on May 4. “Their marriage was something we admired. They were together since their adolescence and represented our family’s pride.”
As reported by CBS affiliate KHOU, the couple’s three children—aged 3, 8, and 13—were at home when the shooting occurred around 1 p.m. on that Saturday. Thankfully, the children were not physically harmed. Marin de Romero was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.
Romero reportedly called 911, admitting to the shooting, according to the police statement. “Upon arrival, deputies located and detained [Romero] without incident,” the statement detailed. Romero allegedly confessed to homicide detectives that he shot his wife because she dismissed his back pain.
Relatives have said on Facebook that what the family is “going through” has been “very hard.” The couple’s children “will no longer have their parents together,” the loved one from earlier said.
“[Marin de Romero] left this world perhaps without even knowing what happened in that moment,” the relative posted.
Romero remained locked up in the Harris County Jail over the weekend.
