6 p.m. update: The Fulton County Medical Examiner in Georgia has determined that the tragic deaths of an Atlanta police officer and his companion were the result of a murder-suicide.
According to the medical examiner, 56-year-old Kevin Stroner fatally shot 44-year-old Moriah Cardona before taking his own life.
Original story:
Over the weekend, an Atlanta police officer and a woman were discovered deceased inside a home located in one of the city’s central residential areas.
The victims have been identified as Kevin Stroner, aged 56, and Moriah Cardona, aged 44, as reported by WXIA.
Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Prenzinna Spann stated that concerned friends, who were unable to reach the couple, requested a welfare check on Saturday around 4 p.m. at their residence in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood. Upon entry, authorities found both Stroner and Cardona deceased.
They were suffering from gunshot wounds. Police said there was no apparent threat to the community, however.
Police did not say how long Stoner had been an Atlanta officer, but he appears in an report on an incident in 2012 on the department’s Facebook page.
Further information will be released when it is available.
