A Colorado man has been sentenced to over 200 years in prison following his conviction for the murder of a college professor and a series of other crimes. The incident unfolded when he secretly entered her home and launched a brutal stabbing attack.

Ceasar Wilson, 54, received his sentence on Wednesday for the murder of University of Colorado Colorado Springs Professor Haleh Abghari. The attack occurred in her Colorado Springs residence as she was preparing for bed. During the trial in February, it was revealed that Wilson later used her credit card for a “shopping spree.”

According to The Gazette, during closing arguments, prosecutors described how Wilson entered Abghari’s home through an open garage on August 7, 2024, intending to commit theft. However, upon encountering the visual and performing arts professor in her bathroom, his motives turned deadly.

Wilson stabbed the 54-year-old five times during a struggle, with a fatal wound inflicted to her chest, The Gazette reported. Investigators discovered a bloody palm print left by Wilson on the bathroom counter, along with DNA evidence found under Abghari’s fingernails.

Following the murder, Wilson took Abghari’s credit card and car, embarking on a “shopping spree,” prosecutors stated. “Using Haleh’s credit card, using her car to drive around … He knows what he is doing,” El Paso County Senior Deputy District Attorney Brien Cecil told the jury.

Wilson was apprehended in Lincoln County on August 23, 2024, after stealing another vehicle and attempting to escape law enforcement. Prosecutors noted that he injured someone during his flight, although at that time, authorities were unaware of his connection to Abghari’s murder.

It wasn’t until seven months after the Abghari killing that El Paso County prosecutors charged him. Wilson was found guilty in February of second-degree murder, crime of violence sentence enhancers, aggravated robbery, motor vehicle theft and identity theft.

“The violence perpetrated by the defendant against Haleh Abghari, an innocent woman alone in her own home, deserved the harsh sentence issued today in court,” El Paso County DA Michael J. Allen said in a statement after Wilson was sentenced.

“Ms. Abghari’s death was a devastating loss for her family, the UCCS Community she helped shape for over a decade, and the entire 4th Judicial District,” Allen said. “We are grateful to see a just outcome in this case, and to our partners at the Colorado Springs Police Department and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs for seeing this process through, from start to end.”
