In a tragic event on Wednesday, Turkey experienced its second school shooting within two days, leaving the nation in shock.
The assailant, a student who was later pronounced dead, entered the school armed with firearms reportedly owned by his father, a retired police officer, according to Kahramanmaras provincial Governor Mukerrem Unluer. He carried five guns and seven magazines.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of a teacher and three students, as confirmed by Unluer. At least four additional individuals were critically injured in the attack. The shooter’s motive remains unclear at this time.
This incident occurred just a day after another shooting in the nearby Sanliurfa province, where a former student opened fire at a high school, injuring 16 people, most of whom were students. The gunman in that case also took his own life.
School shootings are not common in Turkey, making this week’s events particularly alarming.
Following the attack in the Kahramanmaras’ Onikisubat district, authorities quickly dispatched police and emergency responders to the scene after reports of gunfire. Images from the site depicted emergency personnel transporting at least two individuals into ambulances.
Parents rushed to the school after hearing reports of an armed attack, NTV television reported, adding that police took security measures around the school.
