Police believe the 38-year-old was shot before crashing a stolen car into a pole on Raleigh’s Road in Melton about 9am.

Residents ran out to help stem the bleeding before the man was rushed to hospital.

Four blocks were locked down as a crime scene before police found a shotgun outside a home just metres away.

A man was arrested nearby.

The Volkswagen T-Cross was towed from the scene.

The man is now under police guard at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
