In a perplexing turn of events, a New York woman has been released from jail while the mystery surrounding her 11-year-old son’s disappearance remains unsolved. Jacqueline Pritchett, 50, who had been held at Rikers Island, was freed on Tuesday as authorities continue the search for her son, Jacob Pritchett. Jacob, who is nonverbal and autistic, has been missing under troubling circumstances.

The situation gained attention when, as reported by the New York Daily News, the boy had already been missing since at least April. However, the Administration for Children’s Services did not become involved until October, raising questions about the timeline and earlier oversight.

The case took a significant turn on September 25 when Children’s Services conducted a welfare check at the Pritchetts’ Brooklyn residence. During this visit, caseworkers found no trace of Jacob, and Jacqueline Pritchett reportedly refused to produce a birth certificate to confirm the boy’s identity.

Following this, on October 1, officials returned with NYPD officers to search the home again. Disturbingly, they could find no evidence of Jacob ever having lived there. During this visit, a cadaver dog detected the scent of human blood on a refrigerator in the apartment, which was without electricity, prompting authorities to take further action. Subsequently, Jacqueline Pritchett was taken into custody.

In a series of bizarre claims, Jacqueline Pritchett told authorities she was a virgin with no children, identifying herself as Jesus and insisting that the toys scattered throughout the apartment belonged to her.

Further complicating the case, neighbors reported overhearing Jacqueline yelling at her son shortly before his disappearance, adding yet another layer of concern to this already troubling case.

Days after her arrest, police conducted a search at the High Acres Landfill in Perinton. A dumpster behind Jacob Prichett’s Brooklyn apartment is apparently dumped at this landfill, but authorities did not say whether the case had shifted from a missing person investigation to a recovery mission.

Jacqueline Prichett, who reportedly has mental health issues, remained jailed for two months as she refused to reveal her son’s whereabouts. The New York Daily News reported that on eight instances, she has refused to speak to authorities about her missing son — and has even evoked the Fifth.

On Tuesday, Jacqueline Prichett’s lawyers successfully argued that she was being illegally jailed for exercising her Constitutional rights.

Despite her release, she is still ordered to appear in family court next week to undergo more questioning about Jacob Prichett. The city’s Law Department told the New York Daily News that it “is evaluating [its] next steps.”
