The Walmart store in Glenolden, Pennsylvania, where authorities say an argument between two customers ended with an employee being shot (WCAU/YouTube).
A confrontation between shoppers at a Pennsylvania Walmart turned violent Friday night when one man allegedly drew a gun in the self-checkout area and opened fire repeatedly at another customer, police said. The intended target was not hit, but a store employee was struck by a bullet.
The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. at the Walmart in Glenolden, roughly 18 miles south of Philadelphia, according to local NBC affiliate WCAU.
Authorities said over the weekend that the suspected gunman had not yet been found.
“They rushed everybody to the back of the store,” one shopper told WCAU in the aftermath. “I could see something ricochet to the floor and then it like flashed. So, I’m assuming that was the bullet.”
Another customer described a frightening scene inside the store, telling the station she heard “children screaming” and noticed another shopper struggling to breathe.
“She was panicking,” the witness said. “I went to her side. I was telling her to breathe. Take deep breaths so she could be able to think and concentrate.”
Police said the suspect had been arguing with another man near self-checkout when he pulled a handgun and fired an estimated five to 10 shots. A female Walmart employee, who investigators said was not involved in the dispute, was hit in the calf and transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police say they are reviewing surveillance video inside and outside the Walmart, as well as the suspect’s purchase history, to try to piece together what happened and identify the suspect, according to local Fox affiliate WTXF.
“The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority,” Walmart said in a statement. “We’re grateful to first responders for their swift response and are working closely with law enforcement as they continue their investigation.”
