The case that horrified Portland with its savagery and viciousness was almost solved until the culprit slipped out of the police’s grasp at the last minute.

Are you interested in learning more about this case and where the perpetrator is now? Here’s what we’ve learned so far.

Death: Kate Johnson Portland Murder Case Detail: How Did She Die?

A group of conference attendees scheduled to stay at Johnson’s dorm on May 29, 2001, but Johnson was nowhere to be seen. When a worried student looked for her, she discovered her dorm room was locked.

Kate was found slain in a locked room in Mehling Hall, the dorm where she was living at the time, by school security. Johnson’s body was discovered face up and naked on the floor of her room by police.

Investigators said she had been brutally beaten and sexually assaulted before being manually strangled to death. The assailant also attempted to clean up the crime scene so that no proof would remain.

Medical examiners also discovered a “railroad-track pattern” damage around her wrists, suggesting handcuffing her before the murder. Scene police found foreign male DNA evidence on Johnson’s right wrist and a pillowcase during the additional examination of the incident.

With practically no leads, authorities proceeded to gather DNA samples from a large circle of individuals who knew Johnson in the hopes of finding the perpetrator through a match with the crime scene DNA.

What Happened To Deniz Aydiner Today? Wiki

Deniz Aydiner, a Turkish national, was apprehended, prosecuted, and convicted of Kate Johnson’s murder.

When the investigation became cold, police reached out to Aydiner. Police gathered samples from all of Kate’s contacts in a last-ditch effort to discover the murderer, and Aydiner’s name was on the list.

Aydiner also agreed to provide the cops with a sample of his DNA to compare to the one recovered at the crime scene.

Aydiner’s DNA was the perfect match to the one found near the murder when the DNA test results were returned in June 2003.

The Turkish national was taken into custody. When detectives investigated Aydiner’s residence on his arrest, they discovered handcuffs and pornographic recordings.

In 2019, Aydiner filed an appeal, claiming that the Portland Police Department violated the Turkish extradition treaty by using “trickery and deception” to entice him back to Portland. Still, the Oregon Court of Appeals dismissed his claim, citing a United States Supreme Court ruling on extradition treaties, and upheld the original life sentence. Aydiner is now housed in the Oregon State Penitentiary.
