A 65-year-old California woman is facing a murder charge after authorities say she used a flagpole to inflict fatal “traumatic injuries” on her husband inside their affluent gated community.
Vicky Kyung Mi Kim was arrested and charged with one count of murder, authorities said. Officials have not released the victim’s name while they work to notify his next of kin.
Deputies with the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station were called to The Enclave, an upscale condominium complex on Gateway Drive, at 9:47 a.m. on Sept. 4 after receiving a report of “unknown trouble,” according to a press release from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
When deputies arrived, they found Kim’s husband suffering from injuries authorities described as consistent with a physical assault. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators identified Kim as the suspect, and she was taken into custody without resistance.
Court documents allege that Kim used a flagpole to cause her husband “great bodily harm,” SFGate reported.
The alleged homicide followed a series of criminal cases involving Kim and her husband, according to Palm Springs ABC affiliate KESQ, which reported on the couple’s prior legal history.
Court records reviewed by the station show that Kim was arrested six times from September 2025 through January 2026. Prosecutors filed five domestic-violence cases during that period, bringing 10 criminal counts that included battery, corporal injury to a spouse, violating a protective order and elder abuse.
One allegation involving corporal injury was filed as a felony in January, but court records reportedly indicate that prosecutors reduced it to a misdemeanor the next day.
In that case, a sheriff’s deputy reported that Kim’s husband had a visible injury to his nose after an argument involving finances and accusations of infidelity, KESQ said. Kim allegedly told deputies she had struck him in the nose three times. The case led to a protective order barring her from coming within 100 yards of her husband.
A spokesperson for the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office told the station that prosecutors had pursued additional safeguards to protect the man.
“In January of this year, our office charged Ms. Kim with a felony, obtained criminal protective orders, and intended to aggressively prosecute her for her crimes against her husband,” the office said in an email to KESQ.
The District Attorney’s Office also said it had objected to the more lenient resolution of Kim’s earlier cases.
Deputy District Attorney Salas, who is handling the murder prosecution, said the previous proceedings influenced the decision to seek protective orders and oppose reducing the felony charge.
“That is part of the reason why we requested protective orders, part of the reason why we objected to the resolution of the felony as a misdemeanor, because of the concern for this individual’s safety in the future,” he said, according to KESQ.
A neighbor also described seeing Kim’s husband about a week before the killing.
She told KESQ that she and her roommate encountered an older man after he had fallen inside the gated community. She said he was so weak that she had to use her weight to help him stand.
“He was so feeble, I had to use all my weight to get him up,” she reportedly said. “He could barely walk. My hand was covered in blood.”
Kim’s arraignment had been continued several times after the court repeatedly determined that she was not medically fit to appear. Her latest hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, and prosecutors were seeking to have her held without bail, per KESQ.
