An Alabama woman has admitted to killing her boyfriend while his children were inside their apartment, abandoning her initial self-defense claim after an incriminating 911 call came to light.

Jennifer Nicole Heathcoe, 34, was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to intentional murder in the death of 33-year-old Taylor Rawlins. She had initially faced a capital murder charge and was scheduled to stand trial this week.

Heathcoe fatally stabbed Rawlins in the chest on Aug. 22, 2024, at the Charleston Apartments in Mobile, Alabama.

She first pleaded not guilty. Following her arrest, her attorney said Heathcoe had been in a “tumultuous” and “violent relationship” and believed she had no option but to use a knife in self-defense.

Her father, Donald Cain, likewise maintained that the stabbing was justified.

“It was self-defense,” Cain said. He told local CBS affiliate WKRG that the relationship had deteriorated for Heathcoe over the roughly year she had been with Rawlins: “Every time I saw her for the last couple of times she was with him for about a year, it’s just gone bad for her,” he reported.

That account began to unravel after investigators reviewed the 911 recordings.

Rawlins’ 9-year-old daughter called emergency services from her room in an attempt to save her father. According to transcript details reported by local Fox affiliate WALA, the girl initially identified her stepmother, Heathcoe, as the person who stabbed him.

“My stepmom stabbed my dad,” the girl reportedly told the dispatcher. “Please come quick! My daddy is gonna die.”

The recording then captured Heathcoe apparently directing the child to blame the stabbing on someone else.

Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood told WALA that Heathcoe appeared to be “telling the child that’s calling to say that it wasn’t her” in an effort to “minimize [Heathcoe’s] involvement in this murder case.” He said the conduct could point to a “consciousness of guilt” rather than legitimate self-defense.

Heathcoe also placed a 911 call that night, describing a “dispute” before the stabbing.

“Yes, there was just this uh, a dispute and … I got you baby. I got you. Breathe for me,” Heathcoe allegedly said while Rawlins was dying. She then suggested that someone else had attacked him.

“They ran out immediately,” she told the dispatcher.

Rawlins’ obituary described him as a devoted father of two who shared a “deep connection to his mother” as her only child. It also remembered his “vibrant personality, sharp humor, and warm laughter [which] brought comfort and joy to everyone around him.”

The obituary urged people to honor Rawlins’ memory by discussing domestic violence awareness, noting that even small actions can help create a safer world for families and individuals.
