Logan Federico, 22, takes a pause from balancing two jobs and her studies at South Piedmont Community College in Waxhaw, North Carolina, to enjoy a weekend visiting friends at USC in Columbia, South Carolina.
The aspiring educator and her companions were making their way back from an evening out, nearing three a.m. The group quickly disbands to their rooms, intending to sleep in on Saturday morning.
Unbeknownst to them, a burglar is on the loose in the peaceful neighborhood, going through nearby houses. Primarily occupied by USC fraternity members, with frequent late-night gatherings and everyone keeping different hours, doors are rarely locked.
The burglar gains access to the neighboring home no problem—walking right through one of the doors without a sound to alert anyone of his presence.
Shortly after 11 a.m. on Saturday, the fraternity brothers and their visiting guests are jolted awake by the sound of a gunshot inside the house. The frightened young men and women converge in the living room, but Logan does not emerge from the guest room. Her friends rush in to check on her and discover Logan unconscious, lying in a pool of blood.
It appears her belongings have been ransacked.
While the friends contact 911 to report Logan’s shooting, their adjacent neighbor is simultaneously calling in a car theft. During the call, the neighbor realizes that a shotgun is also missing from his premises.
Law enforcement swiftly pieces the evidence together and embarks on the pursuit of Logan’s assailant. Mere moments later, various purchases are made in Lexington and Saluda County with Logan’s debit card.
Checking cameras from the businesses listed in Logan’s bank records, investigators catch their suspect on video and recognize him immediately as frequent flier Alexander Dickey.
