David Moyes came out swinging yesterday as he told West Ham’s disgruntled fans: this is as good as it gets for you.

Moyes faced fierce criticism after Wednesday’s 5-1 Carabao Cup quarter-final loss to Liverpool for making six changes to his team, including dropping Lucas Paqueta and James Ward-Prowse.

The 60-year-old Scot admitted yesterday he fielded a weakened side at Anfield as his focus is on the Premier League, where they will host Manchester United at the London Stadium tomorrow lunchtime.

‘Avoiding relegation, I remember that,’ Moyes said as he approaches his four-year anniversary in charge of West Ham.

‘I remember a lot of the games in those periods, to the point where we’re now talking about quarter-finals of cups, semi-finals of cups, winning a cup, trying to challenge to be in Europe through your league position, made it to Europe through your league position twice.

‘I don’t know how, genuinely, it gets an awful lot better without us getting absolute trillions from somewhere else where we can buy success. I don’t see where it’s getting much better.’

Moyes is set to return to a full-strength line-up for the visit of his former club tomorrow.

Continuing, he said: ‘We’re in a world now where people want things to be better quickly. I’m finding that hard to see, unless a country comes to give you the finances which is required.

‘The Premier League is really strong. There is probably only one club above and around us who has a lesser budget than us in the Premier League at the moment, and that’s Brighton.

‘From that alone, you might think I’m doing as well as I can do, because the budgets of the other clubs are so much greater, whether it’s wages or transfer fees. I feel as if I’m having to justify some of those questions. But not many talk about it, so there’s some facts.’

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

On West Ham’s fringe players, many of whom have not taken their chances to impress, Moyes added: ‘For a while we’ve been trying to give other boys a game. So where would we do it?

‘Will we do it against Manchester United? Probably not, because I’ve said openly here that our bread and butter is the Premier League.

‘We’ve got European football and somewhere along the line I’ve got to give some of the players an opportunity. Over the last few years, we’ve used Europe to give players games. But this year, the European games have been much tougher.’
