On an electrifying Sunday evening, Autumn Durald Arkapaw shattered barriers by becoming the first woman and first Black individual to clinch the Oscar for Best Cinematography with her work on “Sinners.”

Arkapaw’s achievement is monumental, as she joins the ranks of only three women ever nominated in this category throughout the history of the Academy Awards. Prior to her win, she had already set a groundbreaking precedent as the first woman of color to receive a nomination in this field.

Her victory was met with a standing ovation from the audience at the Dolby Theatre, underscoring the significance of her accomplishment.

In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Arkapaw expressed her gratitude towards director Ryan Coogler, stating, “Whenever I thank Ryan, he always says, ‘No, thank you. Thank you for believing in me, and thank you for trusting me.’ That’s the kind of collaborator I am fortunate to have.” She emphasized the sincerity of Coogler’s words, underscoring the supportive nature of their professional relationship.

Arkapaw reflected on her connection with Coogler, suggesting that their meeting was fated. “I feel like meeting Ryan was meant to be,” she shared. “As a young girl, encouraged by her mother to pursue any dream, I was destined to cross paths with someone like Ryan.”

“I feel like I had to meet him. This little girl that — their mother, who is over there, told them that they could do anything — had to meet Ryan,” she said.

Arkapaw then asked all of the women in the room to stand up with her.

“I really want all the women in the room to stand up, because I feel like I don’t get here without you guys,” Arkapaw continued. “I really, really, truly mean that. I have felt so much love from all of the women on this whole campaign.”

Coogler’s “Sinners” broke an Oscars record with 16 total nominations at the 98th Academy Awards. The film took home four Oscars.

Now that all the Academy Awards have been handed out, it’s time to party!
