Venice chic: English actress Carey Mulligan is spotted in Venice during the 70th annual Venice Film Festival, and was seen boarding a small water taxi in the city

The Great Gatsby star chose a sharply tailored black blazer with cropped trousers, a black vest top and matching brogues.

She completed the monochrome look with dark sunglasses, a black leather shoulder bag and a simple gold bar necklace.

Mulligan, who married her childhood friend, Mumford & Sons musician Marcus Mumford, the previous year, wore her platinum blonde hair in a loose bun with her long fringe pinned back. With minimal make-up, her pale complexion provided a natural finishing touch.

With one hand tucked into her pocket and the other raised near her mouth, Mulligan climbed aboard a water taxi named Rocco. A Venetian man helped her into the boat as she departed the main venue, the Palazzo del Cinema, apparently heading for another festival screening.

Once on board, she picked up a copy of The New York Times and read as the boat moved on. She was likely travelling between one of the festival’s four venues—the Palazzo del Cinema, Palazzo del Casinò, PalaBiennal and Sala Darsena—to see one of the eight  different screens showing the 20 films competing for the coveted Golden Lion at the world’s oldest film festival.

The jury was due to present awards for feature-length films, including the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Silver Lion for Best Director and the newly introduced Grand Jury Prize.

The festival line-up included Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem, starring Christoph Waltz as a reclusive computer genius, and Peter Landesman’s Parkland, which explores events at Dallas’ Parkland hospital on the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Mulligan was also set to reunite with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn for I Walk With the Dead, scheduled for release in 2015. Later that year, she would appear as the female lead in the Coen brothers’ American drama Inside Llewyn Davis, alongside Justin Timberlake.

Her upcoming projects also included Hold on to Me, directed by James Marsh, and a new adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s fourth novel, Far from the Madding Crowd.
