The nominations for 2025 International Emmy Awards were announced over the weekend and India bagged two nominations this year. Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh bagged his first International Emmy award nomination under the category ‘Best Performance By An Actor’ while the Netflix India film Amar Singh Chamkila is running in contention for the ‘Best TV movie’ award. Dosanjh bagged his nomination for the same Hindi film.

Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila bags two nominations at 2025 International Emmy awards

Directed by Imtiaz Ali (Tamasha, Jab We Met), Amar Singh Chamkila features popular star Diljit Dosanjh in the titular role along with Bollywood actor Parineeti Chopra. Dosanjh plays the role of the Punjabi singer from the 80s who was considered controversial, given his popularity which also grew due to his suggestive lyrics. The Netflix India original has bagged two nominations at the International Emmy Awards 2025. Dosanjh has been nominated for his acting while the film has also been nominated in the best TV film category.

Diljit Dosanjh

Diljit Dosanjh bagged his first nomination for International Emmy Awards this year with Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila. Dosanjh is a widely-loved and appreciated musician-actor hailing from the Indian state of Punjab. He became a household name with his music in the 2000s and soon diversified to acting in 2010. He started with Punjabi films and made his Bollywood debut with Kareena Kapoor Khan in Udta Punjab (2016). With his flare for blending modern with traditional Punjabi folk, Dosanjh is now a global star and holds concerts and live shows across the globe.

Amar Singh Chamkila

Imtiaz Ali wrote and directed Amar Singh Chamkila, a biographical film on the Indian musician who rose to great fame and was eventually shot dead. His murder case remains unsolved.

For the film Amar Singh Chamkila, Academy award-winning musician AR Rahman has composed music while Irshad Kamil wrote the lyrics. The Punjabi singer wrote popular and suggestive lyrics, but his work also talked about the effects of drug and alcohol abuse. When the film released in April last year, it ranked among the most-watched non-English films for a week on Netflix. Amar Singh Chamkila was the sixth most-watched non-English film on the platform in its debut week. It also retained a spot on the list for two consecutive weeks and was among the most-watched films in India on Netflix for six weeks in a row.

India at International Emmy Awards

The first time India bagged a nomination at the International Emmy Awards was back in 2019. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s Netflix India original Sacred Games and Lust Stories were nominated in 2019. Richie Mehta’s Delhi Crime bagged the award for Best Drama Series at 2020 International Emmy awards; and several other projects were also nominated that year. In 2023, apart from several other nominations from India, Ektaa Kapoor (known as the queen of Hindi entertainment shows on Indian television since the early 2000s. She continues to rule the television ratings in India with her latest shows) received the International Emmy Directorate Award. Last year, the Indian version of The Night Manager bagged a nomination.

In 2023, comedian Vir Das bagged his first, and India’s second, International Emmy Award for his Netflix original Vir Das: Landing under the best comedy show category.
