Some members of the cohort of ISIS-linked families that will return home to Australia will be arrested and charged upon their return, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have confirmed.

In Canberra, following an announcement by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke regarding the group’s plans to travel from Syria to Australia, AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett stated that upon their arrival, the individuals would face arrest and charges.

Barrett emphasized that this decision is grounded in evidence painstakingly gathered by investigators over the last ten years.

“We must seize any opportunity to prevent this from happening,” she declared.

She also warned, “This group has been influenced by malevolent forces, posing potential risks due to their ideological beliefs.”

Meanwhile, Duniam accused the government of withholding the complete truth about its involvement with the group.

“Despite their claims of providing no aid, there was previous DNA and biometric testing conducted on these individuals,” Duniam remarked.

“I do not buy or believe the claim that there will be no support provided when support already has been provided. They are not stopping them from coming back, they are allowing them to come back”.

However, Minister Burke was adamant that the government could only do so much legally to block their return.

”There are very serious limits on what can be done with respect to preventing a citizen of a country returning to their country,” he said.
