Carlos Corberan will be forced to make changes against Nottingham Forest one way or another – and a combination of the two sides’ respective weekend results may well give him pause for thought over the best system to use.
The Huddersfield Town boss reiterated after the 3-2 win over Blackpool that his side have been training to play 3-4-3, 3-5-2 and a defensive 4-4-2 having played the final hour of the game with two centre forwards.
Danny Ward was initially joined up front by Danel Sinani before Jordan Rhodes came on for the last half hour of the game. The substitute had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside decision and later set up Sorba Thomas’ equaliser.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough were busy claiming a 2-0 win over Forest playing a 3-5-2.
The confluence of those factors may give Corberan cause to wonder if playing two up top might be the way to go against Steve Cooper’s side – especially since Forest dealt so handily with Town’s 3-4-3 at the John Smith’s Stadium back in September.
3-5-2 could be an option if Sinani were to drop into central midfield, while playing four at the back would help Town cope with the absence of Tom Lees as he goes through the FA’s concussion protocols following his head injury against Blackpool.
This is all just idle speculation, though, and in lieu of any evidence to the contrary we will stick with the 3-4-2-1 that Town have played whenever possible recently – albeit with Sarr in the middle of the back three.
Levi Colwill should be able to return in the other centre-back slot after missing Blackpool through illness – and there may well be a place on the bench for Pipa too if he is passed fit to be involved as Corberan hopes.
Predicted Huddersfield Town lineup to face Nottingham Forest: Lee Nicholls; Matty Pearson, Naby Sarr, Levi Colwill; Sorba Thomas, Scott High, Lewis O’Brien, Harry Toffolo; Duane Holmes, Danel Sinani; Danny Ward.
Substitutes: Ryan Schofield, Pipa, Aaron Rowe, Josh Ruffels, Ollie Turton, Josh Koroma, Jordan Rhodes.
