Miranda Kerr and billionaire husband erase $550m in medical debt

Miranda Kerr and her billionaire husband, Evan Spiegel, have announced that they helped wipe out $550 million in medical debt for families across California.

Kerr, 43, a former Victoria’s Secret Angel, and Spiegel, 36, the founder and CEO of Snapchat, shared the news Friday in a video posted to Instagram.

The couple said they made a multimillion-dollar gift to Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit organization that works to eliminate medical bills for people facing financial hardship.

According to a joint Instagram post shared with the nonprofit, Kerr and Spiegel’s donation helped clear medical debt for 260,000 Californians.

In the video, the pair said they wanted recipients to know the relief is legitimate, explaining that affected families will receive letters confirming their debt has been erased.

“Hey everybody, Evan and Miranda here,” Spiegel said in the clip. “And today we are so excited because we’re announcing a partnership with Undue Medical Debt to relieve over half a billion dollars of unpaid medical debt for more than 250,000 Californians.”

The couple shared a video via Instagram and explained that thousands of chosen beneficiaries will receive a letter informing them of debt erasure. The pair said in the clip that they wanted to assure affected families that 'it's real'

The couple posted a video on Instagram explaining that thousands of selected recipients will receive letters notifying them their debt has been cleared, with the pair emphasizing that the relief is “real”

‘When someone you love is sick. All you want to do is focus on helping them get better,’ the KORA Organics founder continued.

‘That’s why we wanted to support this effort and help relieve medical debt, so families can focus on caring for their loved ones and really supporting their healing.’

Spiegel and Kerr said that qualifying families would receive a letter regarding forgiven medical debt in the mail.

According to the nonprofit, the couple made the donation in the spring and thousands of chosen beneficiaries living in California would begin receiving letters starting in mid-July.

Their donation of an undisclosed amount meant the medical debt relief charity was able to acquire bundled, unpaid medical debt for a fraction of the cost.

On average, every dollar donated to Undue Medical Debt can relieve $100 in medical debt, according to the nonprofit’s official website.

The nonprofit ‘buys and forgives medical debt for households earning at or less than four times the federal poverty level, and those for whom medical debt is at least 5 percent of their annual income,’ according to Undue Medical Debt president and CEO Allison Sesso.

Many fans took to the comments section to thank the couple as some praised Kerr and Spiegel for using their extreme wealth ‘the right way.’

There was also an additional user who commented that they received one of said notices from the nonprofit and thanked the couple for helping them erase their medical debt.

Kerr and Spiegel are no strangers to giving back.

Back in 2022, the couple paid off more than $10 million in student loans for the graduating class at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California.

Kerr and Spiegel have been married since 2017 and are parents to sons Hart, eight, Myles, six, and Pierre, two.

Kerr also shares 15-year-old son Flynn with her ex-husband Orlando Bloom.
