Cringe comedy holds a unique place in the entertainment landscape, and few excel in this genre like Tim Robinson. His latest original series on HBO is skyrocketing on streaming platforms and garnering enthusiastic applause from critics.

Robinson, alongside frequent collaborator Zach Kanin, crafts an eight-episode series that delves into familiar territory for fans of his previous work: a character finds himself humiliated before a crowd and, rather than letting it go, fervently tries to vindicate himself. According to FlixPatrol, “The Chair Company” is dominating HBO Max’s charts. Over at Rotten Tomatoes, the series enjoys a perfect 100% rating, with critics hailing, “Tim Robinson’s explosive comedic style finds a perfect medium in ‘The Chair Company,’ a spiral into paranoia that harvests laughter from the most uncomfortable situations.”

Critics have been effusive in their praise. Chris Evangelista from Looper’s sister site /Film commends the series, suggesting it resembles an “I Think You Should Leave” character wandering into thrillers like ‘The Parallax View’ or ‘Three Days of the Condor.’ Over at The Hollywood Reporter, Angie Han notes, “As with Robinson’s other works, it’s a deliberately uncomfortable experience, as likely to provoke squirming as it is laughter. Fans of his quirky style are in for a wild ride.” Brian Tallerico, writing for RogerEbert.com, humorously observes, “It’s a show that toggles between a mystery and a study of a man losing his sanity. Perhaps it’s both.” So, what exactly unfolds in “The Chair Company”?

The debut episode, directed by Andrew DeYoung—known for his collaboration with Robinson on the eccentric comedy “Friendship”—introduces Ron Trosper (played by Robinson), a likable yet short-tempered man. While dining with his wife Barb (portrayed by Lake Bell) and children, Natalie and Seth (played by Sophia Lillis and Will Price), he’s celebrating a major project at his company, Fisher Robay. As Ron leads a company-wide presentation, his moment of glory is disrupted when his chair collapses in front of an audience.

Mortified by this mishap, Ron becomes fixated on the manufacturer of the chair, Tecca, reaching out to them only to find his efforts thwarted at every turn. A standout comedic moment occurs when Ron, triumphant after locating a customer service email, is devastated as his message bounces back, shaking him to his core. Given Robinson’s signature style, Ron might uncover a conspiracy about Tecca’s chairs, but it’s more likely that his antics will alienate those around him as he obsessively fixates on the broken chair.

What is The Chair Company even about?

If the initial episode of “The Chair Company” sounds awkward and cringeworthy, that’s intentional. Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin are celebrated for their eccentric and often hilariously uncomfortable brand of cringe comedy, best exemplified in their Netflix series “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.” The show, which has secured three Emmys—two for Robinson’s performance and one for the series as a short form comedy—features Robinson and comedic talents like Sam Richardson in absurdly awkward scenarios. The very first sketch, where Robinson’s character stubbornly insists a door opens both ways, encapsulates the show’s overall comedic essence.

Ron is, to put it lightly, destroyed by this incident and develops an obsession with the company that made the chair, Tecca, trying to complain to them and hitting dead ends at every turn. (One of the funniest moments in the entire episode is when Ron proudly finds a customer service email, only for his missive to bounce back, which shakes the man to his very core.) Because this is a Robinson project, there’s a solid chance that Ron will end up being partly correct about a potential conspiracy theory involving Tecca’s chairs, but there’s an even better chance that he’ll drive everybody absolutely bonkers and alienate them throughout the show as he keeps being interminably weird about a broken chair.

Tim Robinson’s particular brand of comedy isn’t for everybody — but if you love it, you’ll love The Chair Company

If the first episode of “The Chair Company” sounds uncomfortable and cringeworthy, that’s sort of the point. Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, as we mentioned, are know for their offbeat, often utterly bizarre, and occasionally mortifying brand of cringe comedy, which is most prominently on display inn their Netflix series “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.” The show, which has won three Emmys as of this writing — two for Robinson as a performer and one for the overall show as a short form comedy series — puts Robinson and other comedy geniuses, like his real-life best friend Sam Richardson, in a series of awkward and weird situations and lets them muddle through as poorly as possible. Frankly, the show’s very first sketch, where Robinson’s character “pulls” a door that says “push” and then rips it off its hinges desperately trying to prove it goes “both ways,” is pretty indicative of the show’s overall feel.

There are, to be clear, some people who really can’t stand Robinson or “I Think You Should Leave,” and that is okay! It’s a very specific and very odd show, and it’s definitely not going to be everybody’s cup of tea. If you’re a Robinson diehard, though, “The Chair Company” will definitely deliver the awkward laughs you’re looking for, and with Robinson in the lead role, you’ll get plenty of his incredibly and wonderfully strange line deliveries and facial expressions (the guy makes the mere act of squinting hysterical, somehow). If you need a primer, “I Think You Should Leave,” which spans three short seasons so far, is on Netflix … but “The Chair Company” is streaming on HBO Max now, and new episodes drop on Sunday nights at 10 P.M.
