Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind such hit series as “Yellowstone,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” and “Landman,” has a distinctive approach to casting for his gritty, male-driven dramas. Whether he’s bringing in veteran actors like Billy Bob Thornton, whom he envisioned for the role of Tommy Norris, or surprising choices like Guy Burnet from “Oppenheimer,” Sheridan has a knack for offering roles that are hard to turn down. It’s no wonder he’s become a dominant force in the streaming television landscape over the last eight years.
For Guy Burnet, landing the role of Charlie Newsom in the second season of “Landman” was a serendipitous event. In a 2025 interview with Taste of Country, Burnet shared the story of how he and Sheridan crossed paths by chance at a boxing gym. “We just started talking,” Burnet recounted. “Then I got a text saying, ‘Hey, Taylor Sheridan is interested in you.'”
Despite this promising start, there was a lull in communication until Burnet and Sheridan met again in New York. Sheridan’s familiar greeting caught Burnet off guard. “He said, ‘There is my new employee,'” Burnet recalled. “Then he told me, ‘You’re going to be Indiana Jones.'” For Burnet, this second meeting led to a more concrete offer, and he soon found himself cast as a guest star for five episodes in Season 2.
Burnet’s character, Charlie Newsom, makes his debut in the fourth episode of the season, titled “Dancing Rainbows.” Portraying a sharp-witted geologist, Charlie becomes romantically involved with Rebecca Falcone, played by Kayla Wallace. Their story begins on a turbulent flight to Midland, where Charlie eases Rebecca’s anxiety with a few drinks. Upon landing, Rebecca faces a dilemma when she discovers Charlie is also her colleague at M-Tex.
With a relaxed charisma, Burnet brings Charlie Newsom to life, and the dynamic between him and Wallace’s bold lawyer character is engaging. Their chemistry is palpable, a result of the rapport they built before filming. Burnet told Taste of Country that he and Wallace connected beforehand, discussing life and building a genuine friendship. “Those passionate kissing scenes require two people who are willing and comfortable,” he explained. “The audience can tell when it’s not real.”
Meet Charlie Newsom, Brit geologist and irresistible dreamboat
Introduced in Season 2’s fourth episode, “Dancing Rainbows,” Guy Burnet plays Charlie Newsom, a savvy geologist who also becomes the love interest of series regular Rebecca Falcone (Kayla Wallace). The two meet on a bumpy flight to Midland, as Charlie helps calm Rebecca’s nerves by offering her a few drinks to ease her aerophobia. Naturally, that leads to more after landing, and Rebecca finds herself in a complicated situation with the fella once she learns he’s also her co-worker at M-Tex.
Burnet plays Newsom with a charming, casual coolness, and his fiery back-and-forth with Wallace’s strict and fearless lawyer is plenty of fun to watch — even if it has virtually nothing to do with the main storyline. They have a genuine magnetism toward each other, which, as Burnet continued to explain to Taste of Country, came from a rapport the two developed before shooting together. “Kayla and I built our chemistry before we even started filming. We talked about life, got to know each other. Those passionate kissing moments, you need two people who are game to do this. You’ve also got to like each other to some degree. I think the audience can tell when it’s fake.”
Their turbulent on-screen romance definitely feels authentic. Yet Burnet approached those moments with a deep respect for his co-star, who’s happily married in real life. “She [Wallace] has a very nice and handsome husband who we like very much. You’re also in the character and have to bring that fire to it.” All in all, Burnet joining the stellar (and familiar) cast of “Landman” was a welcome addition to the show’s sophomore season. We’ll (hopefully) see where their love affair goes next year, in an already confirmed Season 3.
