Ohio police say a father intentionally struck and killed a deputy after his son was fatally shot by a Cincinnati police officer.

CBS News reported that a 38-year-old named Rodney Hinton Jr. hit and killed a county deputy with his car on Friday. Rodney Hinton is the father of a teenager who had been fatally shot by a police officer in Cincinnati the day before.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s deputy struck by Hinton’s vehicle had recently retired. He was working off-duty directing traffic at a University of Cincinnati graduation at the time. He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition and later passed away.

On the day before Rodney Hinton’s arrest, his 18-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, was shot during a probe into a stolen SUV. According to Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge, Ryan was carrying a gun while running. The officer involved claimed that Ryan pointed the weapon at him, as reported by Cincinnati.com.

On Saturday, Rodney Hinton was arraigned on aggravated murder charges in a courtroom filled with officers mourning their fallen colleague.

Hinton’s family attorney, Michael Wright, addressed the incident during the arraignment.

“The family, they’re very distraught right now. They are sad for the police officer who lost his life, and they’re also grieving the fact that they’ve lost a son, a grandchild, a brother,” he said, as reported by Cincinnati.com.

According to prosecutors, evidence and witness testimony will ultimately show that Hinton Jr. “in an attempt to kill him,” deliberately stopped his vehicle in the street and purposefully drove into the deputy.

Judge Tyrone Yates scheduled a no-bond hearing for Hinton on Tuesday at 9 a.m., according to WLWT.
